Join us for a festive weekend of dancing, fiddling, skiing and socializing at the Hulbert Outdoor Center in Fairlee, VT

Workshops will feature dance from Valdres and music from Valdres and Telemark.

New to our participants, this year's focus for dance instruction will be the Bonde from Valdres.

Dance parties will include sets with music from Valdres and Telemark, traditional Gammaldans and music from Sweden.

Ådne Geicke Kolbjørnshus &
Tora Skavhaug Vik

Ådne Geicke Kolbjørnshus is from Valdres and was a gymnast and snowboarder before he started dancing as a 16-year old. Ådne has won Landskappleiken (Norway’s Championship) in Halling 3 times, and he also has several high rankings with Valdresspringar and Bonde with Tora.

Ådne has participated in many scenic productions in partnership with the dance companies Frikar and Kartellet. He also produces his own shows and won an award for 2024 Production of the Year with his production titled Bill.merk: Heil ved. He has received an artist’s grant from the state to further his skills in amongst other things the Bonde from Valdres.

Tora Skavhaug Vik is from Vang in Valdres and is a sought after Springar dancer. Tora has danced with Ådne since she was 14 years old and as a 17 year old she became the youngest dancer with an A-Class ranking. Since then she has had several high rankings with Valdres Springar and Bonde at Jørn Hilme Stemnet and Landskappleiken. Tora is an economist, works with classical music, and doesn’t shy away from a fun party.

This will be Ådne and Tora’s first time teaching dance in the US, and we couldn’t be more excited to start learning the Bonde with them. We’ve included a brief description of the bonde along with a video of Ådne and Tora dancing.

Syver Rolandsgard Hauge

Syver Rolandsgard Hauge is a young but experienced hardanger fiddle player from Vestre Slidre in Valdres. He started to play hardanger fiddle when he was five years old and over the years has had several instructors, including Jan Beitohaugen Granli, Sivert Andreas Holmen and Magne Olav Selland among others.

Syver has achieved multiple good rankings at competitions and he is a popular fiddler for conserts as well as dance-evenings. We are pleased to be able to introduce Syver to our event participants this year.

Maria Vaaje

Maria is from the Agder region in Southern-Norway, bordering Telemark. She started playing classical violin and folk music at the age of 6, and soon started with the study of the hardanger fiddle - especially focusing on the repertoire of Agder and Telemark.

Maria is recognized as one of the young emerging talents on the Norwegian folk music scene, achieving excellent results at regional and national competions, and recently received a folk music grant from Sparebanken Sør of Setesdal Spelemannslag.

She has studied Norwegian Folk Music at a bachelor level at University of South-East Norway in Rauland, under the guidance of master fiddle player Ottar Kåsa.

Maria will be sharing tunes from Telemark and perhaps some tunes from Agder during the fiddle Workshops at Ski Dance Weekend, and will play sets of music from Telemark for the evening dance parties. She is excited to join us, and while she is new to our event, she is already well known to many of our participants.

lydia ievins

Based in Montague MA, lydia ievins plays 5-string fiddle and nyckelharpa for Scandinavian and English Country dancing. She loves improvising rich harmonic lines; in the Zoom era she’s been refining the ability to play duo gigs alone with looper-pedal magic. As an avid dancer herself, she infuses her playing with rhythmic clarity and sensitive phrasing to produce irresistible dance music.

A graduate of the Eric Sahlström Institute, lydia has earned a bronze Zorn Badge for her fiddling in the Uppland tradition. Her most recent CD, Koivu (2018), debuts a collaboration with Helsinki-based pianist and composer Juha Kujanpää.
