Ski Dance Weekend brings Norwegian traditional dancing, live music, winter recreation and community together in Vermont. The weekend centers on dance and fiddle workshops with evening dance parties, gathering around shared meals, heading outside into the winter landscape, and spending time with friends old and new.
Dance & Fiddle Workshops
Learn from tradition bearers.
Daytime workshops are woven throughout the weekend, giving dancers and musicians opportunities to learn directly from accomplished tradition bearers. Dance workshops focus on Norwegian bygdedans, while fiddle workshops give musicians a chance to learn tunes, technique, and traditions from artists deeply rooted in the music.
The workshops bring people together to learn, share, and deepen their connection to these traditions — whether they have been part of your life for years or you are discovering them for the first time.
Evening Dance Parties
Live music brings the whole weekend together.
Live music fills the main hall as everyone comes together for the dance parties with sets from Valdres, Telemark, as well as Swedish sets, Gammaldans and Pols.
As the dancing carries on into the night, evening snacks inspired by traditional Norwegian fare help keep everyone going. Saturday night includes fresh vaffler served with brunost, syltetøy and sour cream.
Gathering Around the Table
Food is part of the tradition.
The Norwegian experience doesn't stop when the fiddling and dancing do. Over the years, the Hulbert kitchen staff has become an integral part of Ski Dance Weekend, preparing meals with fresh ingredients and working with us to bring elements of Norwegian food traditions to the table.
Saturday evening includes a special banquet. Those with traditional bunad or folkedrakt may choose to wear it as part of the celebration.
The Hulbert kitchen staff is also experienced in accommodating a variety of dietary restrictions and food allergies. When you register you can provide us with details and we'll communicate them to the Hulbert staff in advance of the event.

Spaces to Learn, Play & Visit
Rooms for every part of the weekend.
Having several spaces available means different parts of the weekend can unfold naturally at the same time. Beyond the main hall, a library becomes home to informal jam sessions, and a recreation room gives younger participants somewhere to get away and have fun. Smaller rooms host fiddle workshops.
A corner of the dining hall is set aside as a lounge with a table for puzzles, with a new theme and selection appearing each year. It's a relaxing place to sit for a while, socialize, and enjoy some downtime.
Step Outside
Winter writes its own schedule.
When conditions cooperate, the weekend offers opportunities for ice skating and Nordic skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or simply getting out into the winter quiet.
Nearby Lake Morey is a draw in its own right; it offers a groomed skating trail that ranks among the longest continuous skating loops in the country. Conditions vary from winter to winter, so nothing is promised — but when the ice is good, it's memorable. Lake Morey Resort offers winter skate rentals, including Nordic skates when available. Settle In for the Weekend
Stay where the weekend happens.
Hulbert Outdoor Center is a camp-like setting in Fairlee, Vermont, offering cozy shared cabins on site, making it easy to settle in and stay close to everything happening throughout the weekend.
For those who prefer more private accommodations, motels, bed-and-breakfasts, and vacation rentals are available nearby. Participants choosing to stay off site are still only a short drive from the weekend's activities.
Families Welcome
A Weekend for Families, Too
Families with children have always been an important part of Ski Dance Weekend. Hulbert gives kids plenty of room to be kids, with a recreation room upstairs from the dance hall and places outdoors to explore, play, and enjoy Vermont winter.
We occasionally include Norwegian-inspired outdoor traditions — like gathering around a fire to roast hot dogs and make pinnebrød, bread dough wrapped around a stick and baked over the fire. The activities may change from year to year, but the idea is the same: make sure the kids get to have some fun of their own.
On-site child care may be available for an additional cost. We’ll work with interested families before the weekend to explore local child care options and help coordinate arrangements when possible.
