Biography

Birgit Haukås

Hardanger Fiddle · Traditional Dance · Telemark

Birgit Haukås is a Hardanger fiddler, dancer, and teacher from Tinn in Telemark, Norway. Deeply rooted in the traditional music and dance of her home region, she is an accomplished performer in both disciplines. At Landskappleiken, Norway’s national traditional music and dance competition, she earned third place in solo Hardanger fiddle in 2023 and qualified for A-class, the highest competitive level in traditional couples dancing, in 2024.

Birgit holds a bachelor’s degree in Traditional Music and a master’s degree in Traditional Arts from the University of South-Eastern Norway in Rauland. Her studies have focused on the traditions of Telemark, particularly Tinn, with a special interest in the relationship between music and dance. Her master’s research explored the communication between musicians and dancers, a connection central to her approach as both a performer and teacher. Her musical and dance influences include Lars-Ingar Meyer Fjeld, Per Anders Buen Garnås, Torbjørn R. Dokken, Unni Boksasp, and Stian Roland.

An experienced instructor, Birgit has taught traditional dance and Hardanger fiddle in a variety of settings. She previously worked at the Norwegian Center for Traditional Music and Dance in Trondheim and currently serves as a student adviser and university lecturer in Traditional Dance at the University of South-Eastern Norway in Rauland.

At Ski Dance Weekend 2027, Birgit will provide live music for the dance workshops, bringing her experience as both a fiddler and dancer to the workshops and evening dances.
