New to Ski Dance?
Learn more about what to expect when you arrive
We are looking forward to continuing our event in 2025 with great music and dancing along with socializing, skiing, skating, good food and many other possibilities. We take pride in the welcoming and relaxed environment that is associated with this event.
Dance and Music
This year's event will feature dance workshops from the Valdres region of Norway, and music workshops from Valdres and Telemark. There are also several Swedish music enthusiasts who gather for music jams during the day and in the evenings.
Dance Parties
The evenings will feature dance parties with an emphasis on Norwegian traditional dance (Bygdedans) from Valdres and Telemark played by Syver Rolandsgard Hauge and TBD. lydia ievins will play sets of Swedish music. There will also be sets for gammaldans featuring Pols, Rull and Polskas, and a smattering of dances from other regions in Norway.
Workshops
Thursday evening there will be a short introduction to the basics of the Bonde from Valdres interspersed with the party to help everyone get started. In the morning and afternoon on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday morning, Ådne Geicke Kolbjørnshus and Tora Skavhaug Vik will share traditions of the Bonde from Valdres, with Syver providing live music for the instruction.
Music workshops will also feature our fiddlers who will share traditions of Hardanger fiddle tunes during the same times as the dance workshops. For those interested in flat fiddle music from Sweden and Norway there will likely be jam sessions concurrent with the dance and Hardanger fiddle workshops.
Location
Fairlee is in the Connecticut River valley in central Vermont. Hulbert is a camp-like setting. We dance in the same convenient and homey building where we eat. Cross-country ski trails, ice skating on Lake Morey, and snow-shoeing are right out the door (depending on the weather). Additional cross country and downhill areas are within easy driving distance.
There are a few locations that rent skis if you prefer not to bring your own, and several more locations that are within a reasonable driving distance from Fairlee. See the Activities page for links to nearby ski areas.
Lodging
The cabins are warm, modern and easy walking distance to the main hall. Towels, sheets and blankets are provided. Occupancy is typically three or four to a room with two bunk beds in each room. Beds in the cabins are reserved first come first served. You may indicate your preference for roommate(s) on the registration form. We try to accommodate all requests. If you want to stay elsewhere, we can send you a list of motels in the area.
Meals
Each full package includes the first night evening meal, 3 meals the full days, Sunday breakfast and lunch, plus late-night snacks on Friday and Saturday. Vegetarians must register in advance. If you have special dietary needs, you may contact Hulbert in advance at 802/333-3405.
Saturday night dinner will be a Norwegian style banquet. If you have a traditional bunad or folkedrakt this is a great opportunity to wear it.
Dates and Times
Participants are welcome to arrive at The Hulbert Outdoor Center after 4pm on Thursday, January 30. The Friday to Sunday packages officially start with dinner on Friday. If you plan to arrive earlier let us know and we can make arrangements. The event ends with lunch at about 1pm on Sunday, February 2.
Getting There
Hulbert is only three miles from exit 15 off Interstate 91 in Fairlee, VT. The closest airport is Manchester, NH. Airports including Boston (MA), Hartford (CT, or Albany (NY) are other possibilities. You can get to White River Junction, VT (30 miles from Hulbert) by bus or train; let us know so we can help arrange transportation from White River Junction to Fairlee. Also let us know if you need a ride or can provide a ride, and we will coordinate and try to arrange ride sharing.
Child Care
We can arrange child care / nanny service so you can enjoy the workshops during the day and/or evening parties knowing your children are well cared for. Please send email to Barb Kringstad as early as possible to indicate interest in this service as we need to coordinate details. Note that additional fees will apply for this service.
Registration Deadline
Please note the registration deadline listed. We need to provide Hulbert with accurate counts in advance for planning meals. To assist us with our planning and preparations, please consider registering as soon as you are able.
